Scuba is a fabric term you would have found scattered throughout our website, and as you may have guessed.... we love it!!
So, what is scuba?
This is a form of fabric which started appearing in sportswear first and was inspired by the well know neoprene of wetsuits. It is a double knit fabric which is made from super finely spun polyester fibres. The end result is a super smooth, low sheen fabric with the same round folding characteristics of neoprene, perfect for creating soft volume. Scuba comes in many different weights and is ideal for prints and can be washed time and time again and still look brand new!
My fascination with scuba started as I was hunting for a fabric which I could use to create soft-tailored garments, making the garments washable and functional. The round handle of the fabric means it can easily be moulded to the body to create a skimming shape without feeling tight. I have played with this fabric in dresses, jackets, tops, pants and skirts and it handles beautifully.
The handle is smooth with a cool touch which makes it ideal for layering and for transeasonal (in between seasons). In the heat this fabric may become clammy so definitely not made for high summer. The beauty is that this fabric can be literally thrown in the wash and come out feeling and looking brand new.
We suggest a cold machine wash for scuba and simply let the garment drip dry in the shade. Dry cleaning is not suggested as more often than not the chemicals used in this process will shorten the life of your garments and can discolour whites. Don't be too precious with this fabric! Sometimes kid gloves can do more harm than care. If you are not sure about how to care for your scuba garment, just give us a call! (07) 5535 7763
The smooth finish of this fabric is the perfect base for prints. You will find the prints are really sharp and the colours are perfectly vibrant, just another reason why we love this fabric! Our cable knit printed scuba looks so realistic that we have had so many customers puzzled as they received the print and not actually a cable knitted garment!
As the love affair with scuba has spread across the fashion industry we are starting to say many variations of the scuba come through. Scuba crepe is much lighter and has a crepe finish (high twisted fibre finish) on the right side of the fabric. this makes it look even more like a classic fabric but with the modern characteristics of our beloved scuba. The colour intensity is still there but the sheen finish becomes textured and matt.
