We all have grown to love sleeves particularly in dresses and especially for the professional environment. Let's face it, most corporate offices have their "ambient" temperature locked in at FREEZING and it's just not quite right to expose your arms completely, and pretty uncomfortable as well! Deciding which sleeve may suit you best is not only about body confidence but about your lifestyle and what suits your schedule and location.
The short sleeve
We have introduced a lot of the mid upper arm length sleeve, a favourite with the very lovely Channel 7 Samantha Armytage. This is a modern sleeve we are seeing trending a lot at the moment and is a nice variation on the 3/4 sleeve. Just long enough to be seen as professional but giving you a less covered look and a little more room to move. Try this new length to add a modern edge to your classic wardrobe. At this length our sleeves are double layer with a folded hem making it feel like more coverage but maintaining the slimline shape.
The cap sleeve
This is the very smallest and slightest of sleeves. It literally caps over the shoulder blade which is where the name originates. This is a great alternative to sleeveless and adds a feminine touch to a dress. The media decided a while ago that again only a certain shape arm could wear this length.... absolutely not! If you don't like going to sleeveless in summer this sleeve is for you! Especially in a more conservative work/event environment this is a great solution. The key with selecting a cap sleeve is ensuring the garment is the right size for you so it doesn't cut you off as you move.
If you have very broad shoulders, this look can still work you just need to try and create as much shape as possible through your mid section to balance the look.
The 3/4 sleeve
Possibly the favourite sleeve amongst sleeves! It works beautifully to conceal all the lumpy bits and in a professional environment, this is your go-to sleeve. In order to keep this sleeve length look modern, make sure you stick to a slim line fit. This sleeve is also the ideal length to take your through the mid season times with a lightweight jacket.
The long sleeve
The extended long length sleeve has started to resurface, particularly in evening wear and is hands down the most elegant of sleeves. My preference is to also find a true long sleeve which frames your hand and beautiful rings. In a more casual style it can start to look a little sporty so if this is your length go for a more shirt style look. If you have any mid year events, my hot tip is hunt out the long sleeve and experience how truly stunning they are!
In my mind the main selection on clothing must always be connected to how you feel in a style. Can you walk into a room not grabbing or adjusting the garment? That also includes the temperature you may be running at, don't struggle through the day with a sleeve when in 30 degrees, this won't do you any favours!
The self evaluation - and shutting down the negative mind chatter
My rule with any garment is to try things on when you are ready to love your own style. Try a new shape on in good light with a great mirror and before you turn around and take a look, take a few seconds to decide how you feel. Then twirl around to the mirror and make a decision. You'll love yourself silly we hope!
