We all like to think we live by the rule of “don’t judge a book by its cover” but it’s lies I tell you, lies!! Every time we meet someone face to face the initial visual impression is instant and happens without control.
There has been a bit of a misconception that this is something that is only relevant in a work context but in every walk of life we all have a vision of what and who we want to portray. Is it the all-round healthy living stay at home Mum, the bubbly easy-going woman, or the woman who can do it all?
Body language combined with the right outfit is the greatest personal tool we have. The key component to any look is feeling confident and comfortable with the look, owning it… No matter how hard you want to take on a new look or persona this will not be achieved unless it directly links to your walk and talk, becomes a succinct style.
Recently I went back to a very short cropped hairstyle and I have been quite blown away by the preconceived notions this has drawn and found it to be quite a social experiment of reactions. With a more androgynous haircut it has forced me to play on my feminine side with clothing and my attitude. Not only in the business sense but also on a personal level. I may be able to do it all but sometimes I like to get help and that involves showing my softer feminine side.
So what is your message? Do you say it effortlessly without words? Or do you say something completely different without even realising? Don’t deny the power of first impressions; this is an opportunity for you to make an impact first ;-)
